Boycotts are fine, but easy to do. Top of my list of concern this week: Somali people targeted by our president, just like Hitler targeted people. Today I learned that about 83% of Somali heritage people are U.S. Citizens. How are we going to support them, or people legally seeking asylum, through this direct, unwarranted threat to them?
I’m right there with you. This targeting of Somali communities is terrifying, especially knowing how many are U.S. citizens who’ve built their whole lives here. A few things I’m watching: local mutual aid funds, immigration legal funds, and calling reps to demand protection for asylum seekers.
A large Somali community is almost entirely in Minnesota, with an extended branch in Sioux Falls, SD. (There are also smaller communities in other states.) According to the St Paul Pioneer Press (their daily newspaper) a records search revealed that only 705 Somalis in MN who had the protected legal status Trump rescinded. More than half of all Somali-Americans were born in the US, with the vast remainder naturalized citizens. By definition, they are not aliens to the US. They are citizens with brown skin and a minority religion. PBS explains that some of the rhetoric stems from an event in 2007 when American-born young men decided to go to Somalia to fight in their civil war. Instead of calling about “confirmation hearings” on Hegseth, you probably meant call members of Congress to halt killings in the Caribbean while the Armed Services Committees fully investigate the strikes on alleged drug boats. If they don’t step in, we’ll find ourselves invading Venezuela and in an illegal conflict Americans do not want!

The House and Senate Armed Services Committees just agreed to investigate this week. This will hopefully be lengthy and thorough. It will become harder and harder for Republicans to defend strikes in the Caribbean. Hegseth will be grilled under oath, for example asked for evidence these 22 boats were carrying drugs to the US. In addition, the IG report on Signalgate” was just released. Hegseth is a dangerous yahoo. I just wrote about.
I’ve never used Amazon, ever, for obvious reasons. Have been boycotting Starbucks for years because of their employee treatment; Target more recently for their caving to DEI hire dictates; almost never have and now will not shop at Walmart; and, more recently, added Home Depot to the list. I’m doing more buying from local merchants and donating to World Central Kitchen whenever I can.
Always have boycotted Home Depot, Amazon. Added this year Target Never used Starbuck's, Spotify. Added my local electrician who put a Trump bumper sticker on his truck. I use employee-owned businesses and cooperatives amap and small local businesses. My local small bookshop has been great to special order books for me.

Tip on not shopping on Amazon. Look up the item on Amazon, do a search on the item/business, buy direct. Sometimes even cheaper.
